Singapore’s Oliver Healthcare Packaging received the Packaging Design of the Year Award at the recently concluded Healthcare Asia Pharma Awards 2020.
The award recognised the company’s proprietary Autoclavable Dispos-a-vent® Barrier Pouch, which provides medical device manufacturers a pouch option for devices requiring autoclave sterilization and moisture protection.
The Autoclavable Dispos-a-vent® Barrier Pouch is a new product that provides medical device manufacturer’s a solution to the issue of maintaining moisture inside of the primary package and allowing for autoclave sterilization. It is the only high barrier pouch in the market with the ability to survive steam sterilization of up to 121°C.
Certain medical devices, such as bone cement or intraocular lenses, require moisture in the primary package. At present, many medical device manufacturers sterilize in a porous pouch and then remove the device after sterilization from that pouch, and insert it into a high-barrier pouch to provide moisture protection.
The design of the Autoclavable Dispos-a-vent® Barrier Pouch is an improvement over the existing packaging options of sterilizing in one porous package and then repackaging in a second moisture and oxygen barrier package. By eliminating the need for a second package, the product improves sterility, reduces costs, and enhances sustainability by doing away with unnecessary materials, and manual unpacking and repacking.
The Autoclavable Dispos-a-vent® Barrier Pouch can withstand the high temperatures of autoclave sterilization, and provide a barrier to moisture for devices requiring moisture to remain in the primary package after sterilization and until point of use.
The Autoclavable Dispos-a-vent® Barrier Pouch is designed with a disposable Tyvek® vent for maximum airflow during autoclavable sterilization. This characteristic allows for more efficient gas sterilization cycles, increasing throughput and lowering costs.
It also features a high-barrier foil lamination providing maximum moisture and oxygen barrier properties to extend the shelf life of the device. The puncture resistant HDPE Coex Sealant layer prevents tray edges or sharp ends of medical devices from puncturing through the pouch.
